Choosing the right duvet
There are two important elements to consider when buying a new duvet – the filling and the tog rating. You have a choice between natural or synthetic fillings and a range of tog ratings which measure the warmth and thickness of the duvet. A duvet’s tog rating indicates the amount of warmth it provides, so the higher the tog, the warmer the duvet.
Natural Fillings
Duvets with natural fillings are soft, cosy and comfortable. Draping beautifully around the body for warmth, they make for a breathable and luxurious bedding choice.
Natural fillings have great thermal and insulation properties, in addition to being naturally breathable.
Down is the lightest of all natural fillings, and comes from the breast of a bird. Down has a unique ability to trap air making it exceptionally light. It is also luxurious, soft and fluffy as it doesn’t contain feather quills. Down provides warmth without weight. Down duvets tend to be more expensive, but worth every penny!
Feather filled products generally have a heavier weight than down, as feathers contain small quills. Feather and Down duvets are ideal if you like a little more weight in a quilt. It will give you the same warmth as down but will be a little heavier. The more Down in the blend, the lighter the duvet will feel. Feather and Down duvets offer great value for money
Wool fibre is naturally anti-allergenic. The cool, dry environment created with the use of such a fibre makes it difficult for dust mites to live and breed. Dust mite droppings trigger a high proportion of allergies like Asthma. Sheep’s wool is naturally anti-allergenic and is the perfect choice for those who suffer such allergies.
Alpaca fibre is naturally anti-allergenic. The cool, dry environment created with the use of such a fibre makes it difficult for dust mites to live and breed. Dust mite droppings trigger a high proportion of allergies like Asthma. Alpaca wool is naturally anti-allergenic and is the perfect choice for those who suffer such allergies. Alpaca helps to maintain a constant body temperature due to its moisture control properties so only one duvet is required for year round use.
Cotton is a naturally sourced, breathable material which helps you to wake up fresh after a great night’s sleep. Commonly used on covers thanks to the various cotton weave design options that are used to give added luxury and elegance to duvet and pillow covers. Cotton is also used as a filling in our 3 tog summer weight duvets.
Synthetic Fillings
The Better Sleep Company duvets with synthetic fillings are perfect for anyone looking for a anti-allergenic option, which means there is nothing in them that will cause allergic reactions. They’re also machine-washable and easy to care for.
Polyester is derived from oil-based products and is non allergenic, provides good warmth and is an affordable choice. Polyester fibres are finer and more advanced now than in previous years, where they were commonly misconceived as cheap and a poor substitute for other materials. Brushed polyester also makes for a great cover on products, as it adds a real soft touch finish. Various blends of polyester are available in a whole range of duvets.
Classic Duvets are excellent value for money and available in a range of togs to suit all seasons.
Microfibre Duvets are lighter in weight due to the supersoft polyester microfiber outer fabric.
Wash at 60 Duvets can be washed frequently at 60*C, the temperature that kills 99% of dust mites providing extra peace of mind for allergy sufferers.
Healthy Living Duvets have an Anti-Allergy treated fibre that provides an active barrier which resists the growth of mould, mildew and bacteria including dust mites. Another solution for allergy suffers.
Egyptian Cotton Duvets feature a naturally breathable 100% cotton outer covering fabric offering a slightly heavier feel for that luxurious tucked in feel
Super Microfibre Duvets simulate the feel of a natural down duvet. Being great for allergy sufferers this duvet has a finer fibre filling stitched into individual cassette pockets.
Which Tog rating?
Once you have selected the perfect duvet for your needs you will need to select the correct tog.
A tog rating is a measure of the duvet’s ability to trap warm air. The higher the rating, the warmer the duvet will be. Choosing the right tog is important because if you’re too hot or too cold in bed, you won’t get a good night’s sleep. Use the chart below as a guide:
Warmth Classifications BS 5335 1991 | |||||||
Tog 2.0 Min | Tog 4.5 Min | Tog 7.5 Min | Tog 9.0 Min | Tog 10.5 Min | Tog 12.0 Min | Tog 13.5 Min | Tog 15.0 Min |
Cool | Warm | Extra Warm | |||||
Summer | Spring & Autumn | Winter |
Selecting the right pillow
Which pillow is right for me? is a question we are often asked. When it comes to pillows, one size certainly doesn’t fit all. If you sleep on your side or have a large frame, you’ll need a well filled firmer pillow, whereas smaller frames or back sleepers are better off with medium support. People that like to sleep on their front are better off with a pillow that offers soft support. Choosing the right pillow will help to align your spine, keeping it parallel to the sleeping surface which can help to reduce aches and pains.
Just like our duvets we offer a full range of fill options, ranging from natural to synthetic. Natural fillings including feather, feather & Down and wool tend to offer medium support. Down fillings are ideal for front sleepers ss they offer a much softer support level and many of our synthetic bounce back options are anti allergenic offering firmer support so great for side sleepers.
As well as synthetic and natural filled pillows we also offer a range of specialist support pillows including advanced materials such as Memory Foam which moulds to the exact contours of your head and neck. Look out for the support rating on each of our pillows, which should help you to select the best option for your preferred sleeping position.
Mattress Toppers and Mattress Protectors
Mattress toppers are thicker than Mattress protectors and lie directly on top of your mattress. They add a luxurious extra layer for increased comfort and the ultimate protection for your mattress. Just like our duvets and pillows we offer a complete range to suit all budgets and preferences.
Mattress protectors and pillow protectors can be easily slipped over your mattress and pillows to protect and provide an additional layer of softness and protection. Protectors greatly extend the life of your mattress & pillows by adding a protective layer
Unlike most mattress toppers, protectors can be easily removed and washed at home for continued freshness. We offer a complete range of protectors including natural fillings that are breathable, synthetic fillings that offer allergy protection and also fully waterproof for ultimate protection.
The Better Sleep Company would always recommend the use of a mattress and pillow protector.
